This year Atomico was 10. A decade ago we founded Atomico with three core beliefs: great companies come from anywhere; technology is transforming every sector of our economy and successful battle-scarred entrepreneurs and operators are best placed to help the most disruptive founders succeed.

We are delighted that our vision has become a reality and that Europe is increasingly producing significant talent and expertise in deep technology, ranging from artificial intelligence, to virtual and augmented reality, robotics, and connected devices. This is catching the attention of the region’s investors as well as global technology giants like Google, Facebook, and Amazon who are now expanding their engineering centres across Europe to build out their most important products and services.

As we found in this year’s State of European Tech Report, Europe is on fire!

  • Deep tech is thriving and diversifying in Europe. 2016 was a bumper year with $88B in deep tech M&A, while more US and Asian tech giants are acquiring European deep tech companies and tapping into a growing deep tech talent pool.
  • New tech hubs are emerging across Europe beyond the traditional order of London, Berlin, and Stockholm. The report suggests Munich, Zurich, Lisbon, Madrid, and Copenhagen will be ones to watch over the coming years. Paris is starting to seriously challenge London and Berlin in number of VC-financed deals and deal volume.
  • Traditional industries are awakening to tech. Two thirds of Europe’s largest corporates by market cap have made a direct investment in tech companies while one third has acquired a tech company since the beginning of 2015.

Today, we are more excited than ever about finding and partnering with the most ambitious entrepreneurs who are using deep technology to have a real impact on the world. Investing from Series A onwards in companies with product market fit and ambition to scale, we are the best placed European VC to support these entrepreneurs.

We are now a team of over 40 people – with strong founder DNA and deep operational expertise. We’ve been there and done it, which means we have a deep respect for our founders and are humbled to be part of building their companies. We use our experience to coach and push entrepreneurs, hard, to help them succeed.

This is important because technology innovation at scale is a key driver for economic growth in Europe and elsewhere. Furthermore, some of the toughest global challenges humanity and our planet face will be solved by ambitious, mission-driven entrepreneurs building scalable businesses to address those problems.

We are excited about the next 10 years for Atomico and we wish you all a very happy holiday season and a successful 2017.

Best wishes

Everyone at Atomico
